Face to Face

Ive been told to blog again so that's exactly what i am going to do!

Yesterday i went to a Central Holiness meeting and my first thought was, well this is going to be boring and traditional. See if you know me well you will discover that i am not the biggest fan of the physical traditions of the Salvation Army. But i went in with the Spirit that i will worship God with whatever music is played, with whatever style is used, because God is above our worship styles! God is above what we conisder contemporary and Traditional. And fair go for me to be so selfish to refuse to worship God becasue it may not be a style that i enjoy.

So as the service started i really started to connect with the living God. It is quite amazing as the song book songs were being played i just looked at the words and i thought to myself "hey i believe those words" So i decided to let loose and just worship God in the way i generally do. And God showed up, i mean he was already there it was actually me who showed up for worship. I didnt let wordly things stop me from connecting with God.

I read again today one of my faviourate verse in scripture and that is James 4:7 "submit yourself then to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you, Draw near to God and he will draw near to you"

That day i chose to draw near to the living God! It doesn't matter what our style is just a thing we enjoy, but God enjoys all music! Lets not limit our worship just becasue it may not be something we enjoy.

I admit this is something i find difficult but God has been continually shaping me in this area! and it comes from being constantly humbled and challenged.

So do you let your stlye of music stop you from encountering the king? For those of you who are traditional get out and taste the contemporary music scene who knows maybe God will change your perspective on worship and for those of you who are contemporary, get off your high horse and start appreciating that traditional worship holds significance!!!

Blessings

amen my friend! i rekon this is just the same with people who do the sermons/messages. i notice how so many of the younger generation aren't really attracted to sermons or messages from older people. but then i think well the message is no different really because it is all from God and he is the same yesterday today and forever! and its about God. the person standing up there is just being obedient and letting God talk through them. and think of all the more wisdom that a more mature christian can bring from their own life and experiences! it also just comes down to your own heart. you can get just as much of a powerful message if your heart is willing to let God speak to you.
love reading your blogs. they inspire and challenge me in my own faith. good to hear what God is doin in your life! keep up the God work jake!!!

Sermons or homilies from younger people are too light and fluffy. Young people don't have enough life experience to say anything interesting. And their music is mostly shit, too, except for a small percentage who don't play in church bands.

When I was young I thought most other young people were dickheads with nothing interesting to say.

Young people aren't mature enough to distinguish between emotion and spirituality, either.

My advice, make sure you finish your tertiary studies. In today's world, you aint worth shit without a degree.

That is an interesting comment David, particularly in light of the fact that Jake is a young person. I understand what you are trying to say, but I think that in your bravado you have overlooked some of the key issues you seek to address. Your generalizations rob anything you say of credibility - ironically, something usually addressed in tertiary education.

I have heard plenty of light and fluffy sermons from 'experienced' preachers, and there is a whole church movement which often confuses spirituality and emotion. This is not a matter of age but discernment, which while related, is essentially different to maturity.

Your comments in regards to music are too poorly considered to respond to.

I do concur with your advice regarding education, though I do dispute your conclusion. Education is reliant on application. I know plenty of stupid people with degrees. But, and I have spoken to Jake about this, there is a need to commit to education. The Church needs its best thinking now, and needs people who are committed to wrestling with the issues that confront the church today.

Anyway, just some thought along the way. I hope Jake jumps in here and has something to say about this.

See, i tell u to blog again.. and u get like essays of comments. Ill take credit for that thanks ;)

But i totally agree with this blog. Ive always been told from my youth leader- dont sing the words unless you believe them. So that makes me concertrate on the words more.
Lately ive been tellin myself, who cares about the beat or music tempo or instruments, its more about if the words for me are personally true, to pray and worship through them. Because Jesus is awesome. whoohoo!
glad u blogged again..
dont get slack ;) haha.
peace brotha xx

i was thinking about your blog this morning and started thinking how my church does such a great job at displaying unity in this area. our church is currently growing rapidly and its even hard to fit everyone in on a Sunday! we have a traditional brass band and a contempory worship band. throughout the church service the brass band does a few songs and their band message and we also have a time of worship with the contempory band. sometimes they do a few songs together but without delay, at the end of the meeting, both bands combine and do the last song all together. its such a beautiful unity! (i love what ephesians 4 says about unity too). its great to be able to appreciate both styles. it just comes down to the heart whether you are truly worshiping in Spirit.
God bless

yea i did read Davids comment and i thought 2 myself "do i really want to jump in and argue the point" perhaps early on in my bloggin i mite have but i have discovered that sumtimes people are only out to find the negatives in what people say. I think though that young people have as much to input as the older generation. This can be done with or without a degree.
I think however david that if you only read my blogs with the intent of only looking for fault then you will get nothing out of them.
Thankyou anthony for bringing some light to the other side of Davids poor argument!
